YAMAGATA International Documentary Film Festival
The YAMAGATA International Documentary Film Festival was founded in 1989 to celebrate the city’s 100th anniversary. It is held every two years in October and focuses on documentary films. This festival is one of the few in Asia that qualifies films for the Oscars. Winners from its main competitions, the International Competition and New Asian Currents, can gain eligibility for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature the following year.
