Being a part of the international UNESCO Creative Cities Network means that our city can:
- improve film literacy levels across the city and increase access to creative and critical thinking education and courses.
- take part of an open discourse on economics and cultural engagement around the world, particularly with Film Cluster partners.
- improve residency wellbeing through urban sustainability programmes, increasing engagement with creativity and creative industries
What makes Terrassa a City of Film?
Film Production
Over 500 productions have been filmed in Terrassa since 2008, all managed by the local Film Office and the Parc Audiovisual de Catalunya studios. Increasing industry engagement makes Terrassa an important audiovisual production hub within southern Europe.
Film Education
Terrassa is home to a range of schools and universities, offering film engagement at all levels, from primary school to exploring cinema at university. The Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC) is a dedicated film and audiovisual school and one of the most-sought after film schools in Spain. The Image Processing and Multimedia Technology Centre (CITM) is a pioneering centre for research, innovation and development of knowledge transfer projects in the fields of image and multimedia interaction and is affiliated to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
Film Heritage
In 1897, a 10-second film was shown in Terrassa for the very first time. Today, 23,383 titles and 40,884 documents of film history are stored in The Catalan National Archive. This archive, coupled with a 100-year-old working cinema, are both strong components of Terrassa’s cultural heritage.
Film and Education
Terrassa City of Film is working closely with schools and teachers to engage children and young people, consumers of technology and AV products, to boost critical understanding about media content. Specialized staff run school training sessions and encourage teachers to use creative tools and AV projects in the classroom. TRS Fem cinema!, a classroom film festival has been created to support this training and encourage students to learn together.
Film Production
Terrassa lives and breathes film on a daily basis. Tripods and boom mics are a common sight around the city, waiting at the traffic lights, in small groups on the street corner. In classrooms, 3D projects and designs are taking shape and wood is remade by scenery artists. Household names bring Terrassa to the big screen with productions filmed in the Parc Audiovisual Studios by Netflix or Endemol Shine.
Film and Citizenship
Terrassa is working to have everyone in the city behind the designation and the need for creative engagement. The city wants to build a future for all residents supporting creative industries, ensuring sustainability and wellbeing, while preserving their past in the millenary cultural tradition and hospitality.
