On 4 July 2024, the first plates of the Boulevard of Film on Brandenburger Straße were unveiled in the presence of Lord Mayor Mike Schubert and director Andreas Dresen. A total of 55 square granite plates with the titles of significant films, that were shot in Potsdam, will be installed as part of the redevelopment of the pedestrian zone. An expert jury selected the films. The criteria were the significance for the location, social relevance, audience success/cult character of the film, special artistic or technical achievement as well as awards and prizes for the works.

After mobile screenings around 1900 and the first cinema with a permanent venue in 1909, film production began in 1911 with the construction of the first glass studio as a film studio. Since the first shooting of the legendary silent film THE DANCE OF THE DEATH with Asta Nielsen in February 1912, Potsdam has been an active film and media industry location with cinemas, festivals, film education, research, tourism and archiving and is home to almost the entire film exploitation chain. The Boulevard of Film puts film at the heart of the city center and draws attention to its rich cinematic heritage.

The launch is accompanied by a special cinema programme in July and August. Twelve of the 55 films will be shown in the cinema of the Filmmuseum Potsdam – the admission to these screenings is free.
